A series of consultations are taking place for service users to contribute to plans to modernise mental health services in Bristol.
Although the majority of LGBT people do not experience poor mental health, research suggests that some LGBT people are at higher risk of mental disorder. And they report problems in their encounters with mental health professionals ranging from lack of empathy about sexual orientation and gender identity to incidents of homophobia and transphobia.*
*Mental health issues within lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) communities, (Department of Health) 2007, and Trans people’s health, (Department of Health) 2007.
So please do your best to attend these events as this is a rare and real opportunity for LGBT issues in mental health services to be listened to in Bristol.
