year.

The next event will be the Valentine's Disco on February 16 2008, at the
City Gate Hotel, Exeter.

Open Meeting - Concerns over Issues for Older LGB People and Disabled LGB People

Do you work with, for or have an interest in helping older lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) people and/or Disabled LGB people?

Are you an older and/or Disabled LGB person, their carer, or do you have family or friends who are?

Bristol Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Forum, in partnership with the Council’s Promoting Independence Team, is concerned about emerging issues faced by older LGB people and Disabled LGB adults in some form of assisted living situations.

Some of the issues raised include :

isolation

problems experienced while in assisted care

suitable housing

lack of information, understanding and inability to access information about the recent changes in the law

need for Older/Disabled People’s LGB Network/Support Groups

Of course there will be many others. In order to gain a better understanding of the current situation for older and/or Disabled LGB people and their communities, and hopefully help find solutions, we would like to invite you to participate in one of our discussion events at :

Council House, College Green, Bristol

If you can’t attend a meeting you can contribute your concerns or ideas to us by phone, email or post (these will be used at the meetings).

Lesbian & Gay Parents

I've been asked to post the following on behalf of two women from South Wales.

"We are a lesbian couple (aged 37 and 39) living in the
Cardiff area and are expecting our first child together through IVF treatment - due on 1st March. We would very much like to meet other lesbian or gay parents as a form of support. We have noted that currently there does not seem to be any support groups for lesbian or gay parents in the South Wales area. We recognise the importance, especially for children of gay/lesbian parents, of community, for children to meet other children of lesbian/gay parents and to realise that they are not isolated, that there are other similar family set ups. Anyone interested in meeting other lesbian/gay parents please contact me on helenjones022002(at)yahoo.co.uk"

For more information about The Vagina Monologues and V-Day, please visit www.vday.org"

On the Box

Still available for the next couple of days on (for those who have it) Virgin cable Catch Up TV is "Danny - Escaping my Female Body" which within the confines of the TV formats we are currently subjected to is a sensitive portrait of a young man beginning gender reassignment surgery. The second half of the programme contains a lot of scenes of the actual surgery which personally I could have done without, but elsewhere in the film Danny and his girlfriend talk openly and eloquently about issues of sexuality and gender in a way which I consider quite brave, even in these slightly more enlightened times.

Watch it on catch-up or wait for it to come around again on BBC3

Bristol Clubbing

So, a big weekend ahead for us clubbing gayers....for no reason other than the Brighton contingency are descending and we need to repay the awesome times we've had there (Pride, Charles Street, Wild Fruit; Brighton Rocks to name but a few lesbian good time venues). Camp as Tits is on, as usual, at the Shilling. Always guaranteed a great mix of cheese (Have you had "the time of {your} life"?! "Don't stop me now"), current 'floor fillas' (Sugarbabe anyone?) and all round good tunes. The thing I love about the Shilling, especially on a Friday is that it is always full of women (hurrah!) and they are not all on the pull.....and.....there are people of all ages. I know, how sad do I sound, but I'm not a baby-dyke, cute as they are. So, fantastic. Join us...it'll be wicked. We will be the big group, drinking; smiling and generally having fun. (Will let you know, Saturday, how the day after feels). Oh yeah, if you can suggest a good starting venue (we always go for the Rummer for posh totty cocktails, stright though) or the Hatchet (cheap, good vibe and local). Alternatives welcome.
